Zuma raises officials’ salaries by 4.4%

Public office bearers – with the exception of magistrates – are to receive a 4.4 percent salary increase, compared with inflation of more than 6 percent, the presidency announced on Wednesday.

The announcement comes just before the Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan delivered his #Budget2016 speech.

The presidency’s statement said that President Jacob Zuma had made the decision after considering the recommendations of the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers, and the deteriorating economic climate.

The commission had recommended a five percent increase for public office bearers.

National office bearers include the deputy president, ministers, deputy ministers members of Parliament, Constitutional Court and other judges.

Special grade chief magistrate and chief magistrate’s salaries will increase by 5.5 percent.

Salary increases for senior magistrate, magistrate, national and provincial traditional leaders are will go up by six percent.

Whilst senior traditional leader’s salaries will increase by 8 percent.
